Artist Statement

In my work I use construction methods commonly found in cabinet making and metal working. This methodology is used in combination with primitive ceramic firing processes to create sculpture that speaks about people and their relationships to the world in which they live. These relationships include issues of protection, commitment, growth, sacrifice, strength and failure. It is my desire that the viewer see beauty in the world without overlooking the energy spent to create it or consider what it will demand to maintain.

I feel that the description of my work relies heavily upon the interpretation of content. The relationships that people have to the world become the defining force of their lives. In my work I try to illustrate the effects of these relationships. A person intuitively defines themselves by the roles that they have chosen or been forced to accept. It is my desire to show a glimpse into these roles, the emotional state with which they exist along with hints of the avenue taken to arrive at that state. I hope that I can illustrate as many of the separate emotions that work to create this focused state.

The central focus of my work is the world in which I live. As an artist I feel that I can only talk about the issues of which I am passionate. The most important issues in my life are the relationships I have with the people around me. I try to illustrate the innermost feelings and emotions that are a result of the roles and decisions within my life. I include specific evidence of my journey to this state so I can build a sense of personal ownership of the content of my work.

In this specific body of work, I am discussing the relationships I have developed as a father, husband, son, peer and artist. Each piece is an illustration of a role that defines who I am. It is important for me to recognize the influence the people around me have on the decisions I make everyday. The greatest part of who I am is defined by these relationships. I am a product of my history.

I use the freedom I have as an artist to communicate how I see the world and define my role in it. It is my hope that the viewer will connect to the emotion of my work and raise questions about their interpretation of this state. Raising these questions is what I am most interested in.
